The Brazilian Lawyers Association (ABA) is a civil and non-profit making organisation, established under the protection of the Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988 (art. 5º, line XVII) and the Civil Code (arts. 53, and following ones).

Its Statute has been duly registered according to Law and under the National Institutional Registar upon number 05.382.115/0001-01. Its Headquarters is located at “SRTWN Q. 701, Centro Empresarial Norte, Sala 629”, Brasilia, Federal District, the capital of Brazil.

The Association was founded on 11th August, 2002 with the objective of creating an institutional framework for cooperation among Lawyers in Brazil. In the first case, its services are put at the disposal of its associates on several types of services to be offered before the Superior Courts located at the Capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil, which means, within the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Superior Court of Justice (STJ), Labor Superior Court (TST), Military Superior Court (STM), Regional Federal Court (TRF) of the 1st Region, Federal District and Territories Court of Justice (TJDFT), as well as before the Administrative Courts, such as the Contributors Council, Economic Law Defense Council (CADE) and other federal organizations located in the Federal District.

Regarding institutional matters, the Brazilian Lawyers Association (ABA) will preserve and uphold the Federal Constitution, the citizen, human rights, social justice, work against the slowness in the dispensation of Justice, focusing on the proper application of the laws and quick administration of Judicial System.

The Brazilian Lawyers Association (ABA) has no similarity or conflict with the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), since the latter one has its mission defined in the Brazilian Federal Constitution and under the Law no. 8,906/94. Only OAB can, for instance, performing the act of selection of lawyers and probationers as well as initiate inspection on the professional activity of Advocacy. Also it’s the only competent entity for processing and discipline of lawyers who break the rules of Professional Ethics/ Code, while ABA has the goal of assisting its associates. Furthermore, ABA has no similarity to any syndicate or to any Lawyer’s Institute. ABA has the specific task of representing its associate’s interests in the employees party of the labor relation. OAB, historically, created by D. Pedro II, in 1843, had the incumbency of creating the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) and today it is exclusively dedicated to the study of the Judicial Sciences.
